Animal Behavior

Animal behavior broadly refers to everything an animal does, from searching and consuming food to mating, defending itself, and interacting with its surroundings. In zoology, the branch that focuses on the scientific study of behavior in animals (excluding humans) is called ‘ethology’ (ethos meaning ‘character’ and -logia meaning ‘the study of’).

Behaviors in animals are listed into the following broad categories:

  • Locomotion
  • Foraging
  • Feeding
  • Thermoregulation
  • Resting
  • Movement and Migration
  • Navigation
  • Vigilance
  • Predator Avoidance
  • Defense
  • Aggression
  • Territoriality
  • Sociality
  • Dominance
  • Cooperation
  • Competition
  • Communication
  • Courtship
  • Mating
  • Parental Care
  • Grooming
  • Learning
  • Problem Solving

Insights into the lives of animals are essential for understanding their behavioral adaptation and evolution, and they also aid conservation and wildlife management.
